The compressor is the heart of an air conditioning system — the component that circulates refrigerant and makes cooling possible. - Related component failures that damage the compressor — capacitor failures, if the system attempts to start with a weak or dead capacitor, cause the compressor to draw excessive current in that startup attempt. Repeated hard-start events stress the compressor windings. Low refrigerant causes the compressor to run hotter than designed (refrigerant also carries lubricant and helps cool the compressor). These secondary factors often precede compressor failure.

- The outdoor unit hums when it tries to start but the compressor doesn't engage (listen for the compressor's distinct sound, different from the fan motor)
- The system starts but trips the breaker within a few minutes — the compressor drawing excessive current

- Oil stains around the outdoor unit (refrigerant and oil leaking from a compressor seal)

When a technician diagnoses compressor failure, the question becomes whether to replace the compressor or the entire system. This decision hinges primarily on the system's age and warranty status. A compressor replacement on a relatively new system (under 5–7 years) with a valid compressor warranty — most manufacturers offer 5–10 year compressor warranties — may make straightforward sense. A compressor replacement on a 12–15 year old system, out of warranty, working with an aging condenser coil and fan motor, often doesn't — the labor and part cost approaches or exceeds the value of a new system, and the other aging components are likely to follow.
The honest version of this assessment requires knowing the system's age, warranty status, overall condition, and what the repair would actually cost relative to replacement. A technician who gives you both numbers and lets you decide is doing their job correctly.
What doesn't fix a failed compressor
A failed compressor cannot be repaired — it must be replaced or the system must be replaced. Adding refrigerant to a system with a failed compressor accomplishes nothing. A hard start kit can sometimes help a weakening compressor start more easily, but it doesn't fix internal compressor damage — it may extend the time before complete failure, or it may not.
