AC Not Turning On in Las Vegas? A Systematic Troubleshooting Guide
An AC that won't turn on at all — no sounds, no airflow, nothing — is a distinct problem from an AC that runs but doesn't cool. The good news is the causes are usually more limited and more systematically diagnosable. Here's how to work through them.
Start with the thermostat
It sounds obvious, but thermostat issues cause a significant share of "AC not turning on" service calls. Confirm: the system is set to cool (not heat or fan only), the set temperature is below the current room temperature, and the fan is set to auto rather than on. Then check the batteries — many digital thermostats show no outward sign of dead batteries until they fail completely. Replace them and wait a minute for the system to initialize.
If you have a smart thermostat (Nest, Ecobee, etc.), check the app — sometimes these thermostats go into eco or away mode and aren't calling for cooling even though the display appears normal. Also check whether the thermostat has power at all: a smart thermostat with a dark screen has lost power from the C-wire or its battery backup.
Check the electrical panel
HVAC systems typically have two or three breakers: one for the indoor air handler (often labeled "air handler" or "AHU"), one for the outdoor condenser (often labeled "AC," "condenser," or "compressor"), and sometimes a separate one for the furnace or heat strip. Check that all of them are fully in the "on" position — a partially tripped breaker can sit in the middle position rather than all the way off.
If a breaker is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately or within the first cycle, don't reset it again — a breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the circuit from an electrical fault, and overriding it can damage the equipment or create a safety hazard.
Check the disconnect at the outdoor unit
Most outdoor AC units have a disconnect box mounted on the exterior wall nearby — typically a gray or beige box with a pull-out disconnect block inside. Make sure this disconnect is fully seated. In some cases, particularly after a dust storm or if someone has been working near the unit, the disconnect gets pulled partially or fully out.
Check the indoor air handler for a tripped safety switch
Many air handlers have a float switch on the condensate drain pan that shuts the system off if water is backing up (a clogged condensate line). If there's water in the drain pan below the indoor unit, this switch may have tripped. Clearing the condensate line and emptying the pan will reset it. The float switch location and reset procedure varies by system — some reset automatically, some require manual reset.
Air handlers in a closet or utility room sometimes also have a door safety switch — a plunger switch that interrupts power when the access panel is open. If the panel isn't fully closed and latched, the system won't run.
The 30-minute lockout
If the system attempted to start, failed, and won't try again, many modern AC systems have a time-delay lockout (typically 5–30 minutes) before they'll attempt another start. This is a protective feature, not a malfunction. Waiting and trying the thermostat again after 30 minutes may result in the system starting normally — though if the underlying cause of the failed start is still present, it will fail again.
When these steps don't restore operation
If you've confirmed the thermostat settings and batteries, reset the breaker (once), verified the outdoor disconnect, checked the condensate pan and access panels, and waited out any lockout period — and the system still won't start — the cause is internal. The most likely candidates are a failed capacitor (the most common cause), a failed contactor, or a tripped high-pressure limit caused by a dirty condenser coil or very high outdoor temperatures. These require a technician with testing equipment to diagnose accurately.
In Las Vegas summer, a non-starting AC is a time-sensitive situation. Don't wait on a 110°F day to see if it resolves itself.
