Why Your AC Keeps Turning On and Off (Short Cycling)

A healthy air conditioner runs in steady cycles — it kicks on, cools the house down over 10 to 20 minutes, then shuts off until the temperature drifts back up. When a system starts turning on and off every few minutes instead, that's called short cycling, and it's one of the more common complaints we hear during a Las Vegas summer. It's worth understanding because short cycling both wears out equipment and drives up power bills.

Why short cycling is hard on the system

The hardest moment in an air conditioner's operating life is startup. That's when the compressor draws the most electricity and experiences the most mechanical stress. A system running normally starts a handful of times an hour. A short-cycling system might start many times that, which accelerates wear on the compressor — the single most expensive component in the entire unit. Short cycling also means the system never runs long enough to properly dehumidify or evenly cool the house, so comfort suffers even as the equipment works harder.

Common causes in Las Vegas homes

A dirty air filter. This is the first thing to check and the most common culprit. When airflow is restricted, the system can overheat or the coil can freeze, causing it to shut down prematurely and then restart. In the desert, filters clog faster than the package suggests.

An oversized system. An air conditioner that's too large for the space cools the air so quickly that it satisfies the thermostat and shuts off before completing a full cycle — then turns right back on. This is a surprisingly common installation mistake, and it's one reason proper sizing matters more than raw capacity.

Low refrigerant. A refrigerant leak can cause the system to cycle irregularly as pressures fluctuate. This needs professional diagnosis, because adding refrigerant without fixing the leak only delays the problem.

A failing thermostat or bad placement. A thermostat located near a supply vent, in direct sun, or with a wiring fault can misread the temperature and trigger erratic cycling.

Electrical issues. Failing capacitors, relays, or control board problems can interrupt cycles and cause the system to restart abnormally.

What you can check yourself

Before calling anyone, replace the air filter if it's dirty and make sure no supply vents are blocked by furniture. Confirm the thermostat isn't in direct sunlight and that its batteries (if it has them) are fresh. If short cycling continues after a fresh filter, it's time for a technician — the remaining causes involve refrigerant, electrical components, or sizing, none of which are DIY territory.

Why it's worth addressing early

Short cycling rarely fixes itself, and the underlying causes tend to get worse. A frozen coil from a dirty filter is cheap to resolve early; the same neglect that causes it can eventually lead to compressor damage. Paying attention to how your system cycles is one of the easiest ways to catch a developing problem before it becomes a major one.
