The system depends on that separation staying intact. When it doesn't — most commonly through a cracked or corroded heat exchanger — combustion gases can mix with the air being distributed through your home's ductwork.
What a cracked heat exchanger actually is
The heat exchanger is a metal chamber that separates combustion gases from breathing air while allowing heat to transfer between them. It expands when heated and contracts when it cools, cycle after cycle, year after year. Over time — typically in older furnaces — that repeated thermal stress can create cracks in the metal. A crack means the barrier between combustion gases and circulated air is compromised.
This is why heat exchanger inspection is a standard part of professional heating maintenance and why it can't be done by a homeowner: the heat exchanger is inside the furnace cabinet, cracks can be hairline and difficult to see, and proper inspection often requires specialized tools including combustion analyzers and sometimes camera inspection.

Carbon monoxide detectors: what actually matters

- They expire. CO detectors have a limited sensor life — typically 5-10 years depending on the model. An expired detector may still power on and respond to its test button while no longer reliably detecting CO. Check the manufacture date on your detectors and replace expired units.
- Placement matters. Detectors should be installed on every level of the home and near sleeping areas, since CO exposure during sleep is the most dangerous scenario.
- The test button tests the alarm, not the sensor. Pressing test confirms the horn and circuitry work. It doesn't confirm the CO sensor is still functional, which is why the expiration date matters independently.
- Smoke detectors are not CO detectors. Combination units exist, but a smoke-only detector provides no CO protection.
What to do if a CO alarm sounds
Get everyone out of the house immediately, into fresh air. Call 911 or the fire department from outside. Don't re-enter to investigate, open windows, or try to identify the source — CO exposure impairs judgment, which makes staying inside to troubleshoot particularly dangerous. Emergency responders have equipment to measure CO levels and identify the source safely.
