Swamp Cooler vs. AC in Las Vegas: What Older Home Owners Should Know

If you own an older home in Las Vegas — particularly in established neighborhoods near downtown, the Historic Westside, or parts of the city built before central air conditioning became standard — there's a real chance you have an evaporative cooler, commonly called a swamp cooler, either as your primary cooling system or alongside a central AC unit. Evaporative cooling has a long history in the desert Southwest, and understanding how it differs from refrigerated air conditioning helps explain both its appeal and its real limitations in the Las Vegas climate.

How evaporative cooling actually works

A swamp cooler works on a simple principle: water evaporating absorbs heat. The unit draws hot outside air through water-saturated pads, and as the water evaporates into that air, it cools the air significantly before a fan pushes it into the home. This is fundamentally different from an AC system, which uses a refrigerant cycle to actively remove heat and moisture from indoor air. A swamp cooler doesn't remove humidity — it adds it, which is exactly why it works in dry desert conditions and struggles badly in humid ones.

Why swamp coolers historically made sense in Las Vegas

Las Vegas's extremely low humidity for most of the year is what makes evaporative cooling viable at all. In a dry climate, the evaporation process is highly effective and can drop incoming air temperature significantly — sometimes 20-30 degrees below the outdoor temperature. Evaporative coolers also use dramatically less electricity than refrigerated AC, since they're primarily running a fan and a small water pump rather than a compressor. For decades, this made them an economical cooling choice in a hot, dry climate, and many older Las Vegas homes were built with them as the standard system.

Where swamp coolers fall short in Las Vegas today

The limitation is humidity dependence, and Las Vegas isn't uniformly dry all summer. During monsoon season, typically July through September, humidity spikes significantly on the days storms roll through the valley. On those higher-humidity days, evaporative coolers lose much of their cooling effectiveness — the air is already closer to saturated, so additional evaporation can't happen as efficiently, and the cooler may struggle to bring indoor temperatures down meaningfully. This is the single most common complaint from swamp cooler owners: the system that worked great in the dry heat of June suddenly can't keep up during a humid August afternoon.

Swamp coolers also can't get indoor temperatures anywhere near what a modern AC delivers on the hottest, driest days. On a 115°F day even at low humidity, an evaporative cooler might bring indoor temperatures into the low-to-mid 80s — a real improvement over outdoor conditions, but well above what most people consider comfortable, and far above what central AC delivers.

Maintenance differences homeowners should know

Evaporative coolers have their own maintenance needs, different from AC systems: the cooling pads need periodic replacement (typically once or twice a year, more often with Las Vegas's hard water mineral buildup), the water reservoir and pump need cleaning to prevent mineral scale and algae growth, and the unit needs to be properly winterized (draining the water system and covering the unit) in the off season to prevent freeze damage and mineral corrosion. Skipping winterization is one of the more common reasons a swamp cooler that worked fine last year has problems at spring startup.

Dual systems: swamp cooler and AC together

Some older Las Vegas homes have both an evaporative cooler and a central AC system, either from a previous owner's upgrade or as an original dual-system design. In these homes, the swamp cooler can serve as a low-cost primary cooling method during the driest, hottest parts of summer, with AC available as backup during monsoon humidity or when temperatures demand more aggressive cooling. Running both systems requires understanding how to switch between them properly — running a swamp cooler and AC simultaneously is generally counterproductive, since the added humidity from the swamp cooler works against the AC's dehumidifying function.

Considering a conversion to central AC

Homeowners with an aging or single evaporative cooler sometimes consider converting fully to central air. This is a legitimate upgrade path, particularly for homes where humidity swings during monsoon season create consistent comfort complaints, or where the existing evaporative system is old enough that replacement parts are hard to source. A conversion involves installing ductwork if the home doesn't already have compatible ducting (some evaporative systems use different duct configurations than central AC), plus the new AC equipment itself. The scope of this work varies significantly by home, and an on-site evaluation is the only reliable way to understand what a specific conversion would involve.
