Why Furnaces Click Before They Ignite (and When That Sound Means Trouble)
Most furnaces make a series of small sounds in the few seconds before warm air starts flowing — a click, a whoosh, sometimes a brief hum. For homeowners who don't think about their furnace outside of the coldest weeks of the year, these sounds can be easy to overanalyze. Most of it is completely normal. Some of it is worth paying attention to.
What's happening during a normal ignition sequence
When a thermostat calls for heat, a furnace goes through a short startup sequence before warm air actually reaches the vents. In a gas furnace with electronic ignition (the standard in most homes built or updated in the last couple of decades), the sequence typically goes: the inducer motor starts and runs briefly to clear the heat exchanger of any residual gas, a sensor confirms safe airflow, the igniter — either a hot surface igniter or an intermittent spark — activates, the gas valve opens, and the burners ignite. The audible click most people notice is usually the igniter or the gas valve opening. A soft whoosh follows as the burners light. This entire sequence takes a few seconds and is completely normal.
Older pilot light systems sound different
Furnaces with a standing pilot light (common in older homes) skip the ignition clicking because the pilot is already lit continuously. Instead, you'll hear the gas valve open with a soft sound as the main burners ignite from the existing pilot flame. If a pilot light system suddenly starts making clicking sounds it didn't make before, that can indicate the system is now using an ignition attempt because the pilot has gone out — worth a look.
Sounds that warrant attention
A few specific sounds, beyond the routine click-and-whoosh, are worth noting:
- Repeated clicking without ignition — the igniter or gas valve is attempting to start but the burners aren't lighting. Most furnaces will lock out after a few failed attempts as a safety measure.
- A loud bang or boom at ignition — this can indicate delayed ignition, where gas has accumulated briefly before lighting, causing a small, fast combustion event. This is a sound worth taking seriously rather than dismissing.
- A rattling or buzzing during the inducer motor's pre-ignition run — can point to a motor or mounting issue.
- Persistent clicking continuing well after the burners have lit — unusual and worth investigating rather than ignoring.
Why this stuff is easy to miss
Because a furnace only runs seasonally, the sounds it makes aren't something most households pay close attention to year-round. A sound that's been present and "normal" might actually have changed gradually, or a new sound might appear right as heating season begins after months of the system sitting idle — which is exactly why noticing a change matters even if you can't pinpoint exactly when it started.
The general rule of thumb
A single clean click followed by a whoosh and steady operation is the sound of a furnace doing its job. Repeated attempts, banging, grinding, or any combustion-related sound that feels louder or more abrupt than usual is worth having looked at — particularly because furnace ignition problems can sometimes point to issues connected to safe combustion and venting, which isn't an area to guess about.
