Why Your Heat Pump Is Blowing Cold Air in Heating Mode
Many Las Vegas homes are heated by heat pumps, and one of the most common winter calls about them starts the same way: "It's set to heat, but the air coming out feels cool." Sometimes that's completely normal heat pump behavior, and sometimes it signals a problem. Knowing the difference saves a lot of worry.
First, understand how a heat pump heats
Unlike a furnace, which burns fuel to create hot air, a heat pump moves existing heat from outside air into your home. Even cold air contains some heat energy, and the heat pump concentrates it. The practical consequence is that the air from a heat pump's vents is warm, but not the near-hot air a gas furnace produces. Air at around 90–100°F feels cool against your skin, which is roughly body temperature — so "warm" air from a heat pump can register as cool even when the system is working perfectly. This is the single most common source of confusion.
The defrost cycle is normal
In cold weather, frost can build up on the outdoor unit. To clear it, the heat pump periodically runs a defrost cycle, temporarily switching modes. During defrost — which lasts a few minutes — the indoor air can turn cool, and you may see steam rising from the outdoor unit. This is by design, not a malfunction. The system returns to heating once defrost completes. If you happen to put your hand near a vent during a defrost cycle, the cool air is expected.
When cool air is actually a problem
Several situations point to a genuine issue:
- The air is consistently cool across long periods, not just during brief defrost cycles
- The outdoor unit isn't running at all, or is encased in ice that never clears
- The house steadily loses temperature and the system can't recover
- The system is stuck in defrost or cycling oddly
These can stem from low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve (the component that switches the heat pump between heating and cooling), a defrost control problem, or a failed outdoor fan. None are DIY repairs — they require a technician to diagnose properly.
The auxiliary heat factor
Most heat pumps have backup electric resistance heat for the coldest conditions. If that auxiliary heat fails, the heat pump alone may struggle on the coldest nights, leaving the air feeling cooler than expected and the house slow to warm. Conversely, if auxiliary heat runs more than it should, you may notice unusually high winter electric bills. Either situation is worth having checked.
A quick self-check
Confirm the thermostat is set to "heat" (not "cool" or "emergency heat" unless intended), check that the filter is clean, and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris and not iced over. If the air stays cool beyond a brief defrost cycle and the house won't hold temperature, it's time for a professional look — the internal components of a heat pump in heating mode aren't something to troubleshoot by hand.
