Heat pumps are increasingly common in Las Vegas, and 2026 brings a changed landscape for anyone considering installation — new equipment standards, updated rebate programs, and an expired federal credit that some contractors haven't communicated clearly. Here's a current, accurate picture of what heat pump installation in Las Vegas looks like right now.
Why Las Vegas is a strong market for heat pumps
Heat pumps are most efficient when the temperature differential they're working against is moderate — which describes Las Vegas winters almost perfectly. Our coldest overnight temperatures rarely drop below 28°F, and most winter days are in the 40s and 50s. Modern heat pumps maintain strong heating efficiency at these temperatures without needing to fall back to supplemental resistance heat. Compare this to a northern climate where winter lows reach 0°F or below — at those temperatures, heat pump efficiency drops significantly and backup heat carries a larger share of the load.
The combination of mild winters and very hot summers makes Las Vegas an ideal climate for a heat pump: the system that's doing your efficient cooling all summer is the same one handling your mild-winter heating. If both your AC and your furnace are aging, replacing both with a single heat pump is often the most cost-effective approach when the total costs are compared honestly.
2026 equipment: what's different about new heat pumps
All new heat pumps manufactured for the US market in 2025 and beyond use R-454B refrigerant (or R-32 in some brands) instead of R-410A. PowerShift rebates are processed by the installing contractor and paid directly to the homeowner after installation. They are not an upfront discount — you pay the full installation cost and receive the rebate as a check from NV Energy typically within 4–10 weeks after the application is submitted.
Ducted vs. ductless heat pumps
A ducted heat pump replaces a traditional split system — one outdoor unit, one indoor air handler, using the home's existing ductwork. This is the standard option for homes already served by central HVAC. A ductless mini-split heat pump (discussed separately on this blog) serves spaces without existing ductwork: garages, additions, casitas. For a whole-home replacement in a home with existing ducts in good condition, a ducted heat pump is typically the appropriate choice. Dual-fuel hybrid systems

The heat pump handles cooling and most heating — it's the efficient default for conditions the heat pump handles well, which in Las Vegas is almost everything. The gas furnace serves as backup for the rare nights when temperatures drop very low (below roughly 30–35°F depending on the system) where gas heating becomes more economical than resistance backup heat.
