Heat Pump or Furnace? Understanding What Heats Your Las Vegas Home

Walk into two different Las Vegas homes and ask how they stay warm in winter, and you may get two completely different answers. Some homes use gas furnaces; many newer ones use heat pumps. They heat your home through entirely different methods, and knowing which one you have changes how you understand your system, your bills, and what to do when something goes wrong.

How a furnace heats

A gas furnace burns natural gas to create heat, then blows air across a hot heat exchanger and distributes that warm air through your ducts. It generates heat by combustion. Furnaces produce very warm air and work well in any temperature, which is why they're standard in colder climates. The tradeoff is that they require a gas connection, produce combustion byproducts that must be safely vented, and include components — like the heat exchanger — that need periodic safety inspection.

How a heat pump heats

A heat pump doesn't create heat by burning fuel — it moves heat. In summer it works exactly like an air conditioner, moving heat out of your home. In winter it reverses, pulling heat from the outdoor air (even cold air contains heat energy) and moving it inside. The same outdoor unit that cooled your home all summer is what heats it in winter. This makes heat pumps very efficient in mild climates like Las Vegas, where winters rarely get cold enough to challenge them.

Why Las Vegas is heat-pump friendly

Heat pumps become less efficient as outdoor temperatures drop, because there's less heat in the air to extract. In very cold climates, that's a real limitation. But Las Vegas winters are mild enough that heat pumps operate efficiently most of the time, which is a major reason so many homes in the valley — especially newer, all-electric construction — use them. For much of the heating season, a heat pump is one of the most efficient ways to keep a desert home comfortable.

The supplemental heat question

When temperatures do drop significantly, a heat pump may not be able to pull enough heat from the outdoor air on its own. To compensate, most heat pump systems include supplemental electric resistance heat — essentially a backup heating element that kicks in during cold snaps. This is normal and by design, but it uses considerably more electricity than the heat pump alone. If your winter electric bills spike during cold weeks, the supplemental heat running frequently is often the reason.

How to tell what you have

A few quick indicators: if your home has a gas connection and you have a furnace, you likely pay for gas usage in winter. If your home is all-electric with no gas service, you almost certainly have a heat pump. Another tell: if the outdoor unit runs in winter to produce heat, that's a heat pump — a furnace's outdoor AC unit sits idle all winter. When in doubt, the equipment labels or a technician can confirm it quickly.

Why it matters

Knowing your system type helps you understand your bills, recognize normal versus abnormal behavior, and describe problems accurately. A heat pump blowing cool-ish air in heating mode behaves differently than a gas furnace, and what's normal for one would be a problem for the other. It also shapes the maintenance that matters: a furnace needs combustion and heat-exchanger safety checks, while a heat pump needs the same refrigerant and airflow attention year-round since it works in both seasons.
