Signs of a Refrigerant Leak in Your Las Vegas AC (and Why It Gets Worse Fast)

Refrigerant is what makes air conditioning possible — it's the substance that absorbs heat from inside your home and releases it outside. A properly sealed system runs on the same refrigerant charge indefinitely. When there's a leak, that charge drops over time, and the system's ability to cool drops with it. In Las Vegas summer heat, this deterioration happens faster than homeowners often expect.

How refrigerant works in your AC system

The refrigerant in your AC system cycles continuously between two states: low-pressure gas and high-pressure liquid. The indoor coil absorbs heat by evaporating the refrigerant; the outdoor coil releases that heat by condensing it back to liquid. It's a closed loop — no refrigerant is consumed in normal operation. The only way a system loses refrigerant is through a leak.

This is worth understanding because it means a system that "needs refrigerant added" has a leak somewhere. Simply topping off the charge without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary measure — the charge will drop again.

Why Las Vegas heat accelerates the damage from a refrigerant leak

When refrigerant charge drops, the compressor works harder to move less refrigerant through the system. In a desert climate where the outdoor temperature routinely exceeds 110°F, the compressor is already operating near the top of its designed heat range. Running it under refrigerant stress in those conditions accelerates wear significantly. A slow refrigerant leak that might allow a compressor to limp along for a full season in a moderate climate can lead to compressor failure within weeks in Las Vegas summer heat — and a compressor replacement is orders of magnitude more expensive than a leak repair.

Where refrigerant leaks typically occur

The most common leak points are the evaporator coil (particularly in systems more than 10 years old, where corrosion can develop in the copper tubing), the Schrader valves on the service ports, the flare connections where the refrigerant lines connect to the equipment, and the condenser coil (often from physical damage or vibration wear). Locating the leak requires a technician with a leak detector or UV dye — the leak point isn't always obvious visually.

R-22 and older systems: an additional factor

Systems manufactured before approximately 2010 may use R-22 refrigerant, which has been phased out under federal environmental regulations. R-22 is no longer manufactured in the US and supplies are limited, making recharge expensive and increasingly difficult to source. A refrigerant leak in an R-22 system raises a different calculation than the same leak in a current R-410A or R-454B system — often shifting the repair-vs-replace conversation.

What a proper refrigerant leak repair looks like

A complete refrigerant service involves: locating the leak (not just topping off the charge), repairing or replacing the leaking component, pressure-testing the system to confirm the leak is sealed, evacuating the system to remove moisture and air, and then recharging to the manufacturer's specified charge. A charge that's simply added without addressing the leak source will leak out again.
