What SEER Ratings Actually Mean (and Why They Matter More in Las Vegas)
Every air conditioner has a SEER rating printed somewhere on it — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio — and most homeowners nod along without really knowing what the number means. It's worth understanding, because in a climate like Las Vegas, where cooling season is most of the year, that number has a real effect on how the system performs and what it costs to run.
What SEER actually measures
SEER is a ratio: the cooling output of a system over an entire season, divided by the total electrical energy it consumes during that same period. Higher SEER means more cooling produced per unit of electricity. It's not a measure of how cold a system can get or how powerful it is — a SEER 13 unit and a SEER 20 unit can both cool a house to 72°F. The difference is how much electricity each one uses to get there and stay there.
Why the number matters more in a hot climate
SEER is a seasonal average, which means the rating reflects performance across a full range of outdoor temperatures, not just the hottest days. In a climate where the AC runs constantly for months at a time, the efficiency difference between a low-SEER and high-SEER system compounds over far more operating hours than it would in a place with a short cooling season. The same SEER gap that might save a moderate-climate household a modest amount each year can represent meaningfully more in Las Vegas, simply because the system is running so much more.
The current minimum and what's changed
Minimum SEER requirements have increased over the years as federal efficiency standards tightened, and the rating system itself was updated to SEER2 in 2023 to reflect more realistic testing conditions. Older systems installed years ago may carry SEER ratings well below what's required for new equipment today, which is one reason a 15-year-old AC can cost noticeably more to run than a new one of similar size — even before accounting for wear and lost efficiency from age.
SEER isn't the only number that matters
It's tempting to treat SEER as the single efficiency metric, but a few other factors shape real-world performance just as much:
- EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) — measures efficiency at a single, specific outdoor temperature rather than a seasonal average. In extreme heat, EER can be a more honest indicator of how a system performs on the worst days, which matters in a place that regularly sees 110°F+.
- Proper sizing — a high-SEER system that's the wrong size for the home won't deliver its rated efficiency. Oversized or undersized equipment underperforms regardless of the SEER label.
- Installation quality — refrigerant charge, duct sealing, and airflow all affect whether a system actually achieves anything close to its rated efficiency in practice.
A number worth knowing, not worshipping
SEER is a useful tool for comparing equipment, especially when weighing a repair against a replacement on an older system. But it's one input among several — climate, home size, insulation, ductwork, and installation quality all shape what a system actually costs to run. Understanding what the number measures, rather than just chasing the highest one available, leads to a more informed decision.
