A little attention in spring, while the weather is still mild, makes the difference between a system that sails through summer and one that fails at the worst possible moment. Replace the air filter. Start the season with a fresh filter, and plan to change it more often than the package says — desert dust loads filters quickly. A clean filter is the single most impactful thing you can do for both efficiency and equipment health.

Test the system early. Run the AC for a cycle on a mild day, well before you actually need it. Listen for unusual sounds, confirm cool air is coming from the vents, and make sure it reaches the set temperature. Discovering a problem in April is far better than discovering it in July.
Check your vents and registers. Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Restricted airflow makes the whole system work harder.

A weak capacitor caught in spring is a minor issue; the same capacitor failing in July, potentially taking the compressor with it, is a much bigger one.
