Why Your AC Freezes Up in the Middle of Summer
It's one of the most counterintuitive problems a homeowner runs into: it's 109°F outside, your AC is running constantly, and somehow there's ice forming on it. A frozen air conditioner in the middle of a Las Vegas summer feels like it shouldn't be possible — but it's one of the more common calls during peak heat. Understanding why it happens helps you respond correctly instead of making it worse.
How an air conditioner freezes
The evaporator coil inside your system gets cold — that's its job. Under normal conditions, warm indoor air constantly blows across that coil, keeping it cold but above freezing. When something disrupts that airflow or the refrigerant balance, the coil can drop below freezing. Moisture in the air then condenses and freezes on the coil, and once ice starts forming, it builds on itself until the coil is encased and the system stops cooling entirely.
The most common causes
Restricted airflow. This is the biggest one. A clogged filter, closed vents, or blocked return air starves the coil of the warm air it needs to stay above freezing. In Las Vegas, where filters clog fast from desert dust, this is the leading cause of summer freeze-ups.
Low refrigerant. A refrigerant leak changes the pressure in the system, which can drop the coil temperature below freezing even with normal airflow. Low refrigerant almost always means a leak somewhere — the refrigerant isn't "used up," it escaped.
Dirty coils. A coating of dust on the evaporator coil acts as insulation and disrupts the heat exchange that keeps the coil at the right temperature.
Blower problems. A weak or failing blower motor moves less air, with the same starving effect as a clogged filter.
What to do when you see ice
The instinct is to keep running the system because it's hot and you want cool air. That's the worst thing you can do. Running a frozen system can pull liquid refrigerant back to the compressor and damage it — turning a minor problem into a major repair. Instead:
- Turn the cooling off at the thermostat
- Switch the fan to "on" — this runs the blower without cooling, which helps melt the ice faster
- Check your air filter and replace it if it's dirty
- Give it time to fully thaw, which can take a few hours
If the system freezes again after thawing and a filter change, that points to refrigerant or a mechanical issue that needs a technician. Repeated freezing is the system telling you something is wrong beyond a dirty filter.
Why it matters to act fast
A frozen coil isn't just an inconvenience — running the system while it's frozen is one of the more common ways homeowners accidentally damage their compressor, which is the most expensive part of the system. Recognizing ice as a "stop and address this" signal rather than a "push through it" situation can save a lot of trouble.
