Winter Indoor Air Quality in Las Vegas: Why It Gets Worse When It's Cold

Indoor air quality gets most of its attention during allergy season and summer dust storms. But for many Las Vegas homes, winter is when indoor air is actually at its worst — not because there's more pollution outside, but because the house is closed up, the heating system is recirculating the same air, and several winter-specific factors compound.

Why closing up the house matters

During Las Vegas's pleasant spring and fall weeks, many households open windows regularly. That natural ventilation exchanges indoor air for outdoor air, diluting whatever has accumulated inside. Once heating season starts, windows stay closed, and the primary air movement becomes recirculation through the HVAC system — the same air, cycling through the same filter, over and over.

This is separate from the carbon monoxide safety issue with malfunctioning furnaces, which is a distinct and more serious concern. Normal gas cooking byproducts are a routine air quality matter addressed by ventilation; a CO leak from a cracked heat exchanger is an emergency addressed by detectors and professional service.

Extremely dry air and airborne particulate

Las Vegas winter indoor humidity often falls into the single digits or low teens. Very dry air keeps fine particulate suspended longer — dust that would settle in moderately humid air stays airborne, circulating and being breathed. Dry air also dries out nasal passages and respiratory membranes, which reduces their natural effectiveness at filtering what you inhale. The combination means more particulate staying airborne and less natural defense against it.

Which is appropriate depends on the specific concern; a home with dust and particulate issues needs different equipment than one dealing with humidity or biological growth.

Starting simple

Before investing in air quality equipment, the fundamentals cover most of the ground: a clean filter changed on a realistic schedule, working exhaust ventilation used during cooking, humidity in a reasonable range, and ductwork that isn't pulling attic air into the system.
