But for many Las Vegas homes, winter is when indoor air is actually at its worst — not because there's more pollution outside, but because the house is closed up, the heating system is recirculating the same air, and several winter-specific factors compound.
Why closing up the house matters
During Las Vegas's pleasant spring and fall weeks, many households open windows regularly. That natural ventilation exchanges indoor air for outdoor air, diluting whatever has accumulated inside. Once heating season starts, windows stay closed, and the primary air movement becomes recirculation through the HVAC system — the same air, cycling through the same filter, over and over.
Everything the household generates — cooking byproducts, cleaning product residue, off-gassing from furniture and flooring, pet dander, skin cells, and the CO2 everyone exhales — accumulates at higher concentrations than it would with regular fresh air exchange.
Heating systems stir up what settled
A heating system that hasn't run since March starts circulating air through ductwork that's been sitting idle for months. Dust that settled in the ducts over the off-season gets picked up and distributed when the blower starts running regularly again. - Use exhaust ventilation while cooking — a range hood ducted to the outside, actually turned on, addresses the most concentrated indoor pollutant source in most homes
- Address humidity — bringing relative humidity into the 30-40% range improves comfort, reduces airborne particulate suspension, and supports respiratory health
- Consider filtration upgrades — a higher-MERV filter captures finer particles, though this needs to be matched to what the system can handle without excessive airflow restriction
- Ventilate deliberately when weather allows — Las Vegas has plenty of mild winter afternoons where opening windows for even 15-20 minutes provides meaningful air exchange without significant heat loss
- Run the system fan periodically — circulating air through the filter even when the system isn't actively heating provides continuous filtration
